Sgt Perdie
Roberts was taken in August 2007 during
one of our Air Experience Flying days at RAF
St Athan
Like Perdie, most cadets are periodically given an opportunity to fly in
the RAF Tutor G115.
You will be able to experience aerobatics, shown the
basics of effects of controls, and even take control
yourself under the expert supervision of our RAF pilots
At 499 Squadron Port Talbot, we are just 30 miles
away from RAF St Athan where we are allocated our AEF
(Air Experience Flying)
There is also AEF at annual camp each year depending
on the location and aircraft availability.
Helicopter flights are sometimes available at certain
RAF stations.
Cadets who excel in the both the Squadron and ATC
organisation, are 'sometimes' fortunate enough to
obtain a Flying Scholarship. |

Pictured below is (now)
Sgt Jon Glave
attending his Air Experience Gliding during
the summer of 2006.
AEG (Air Experience Gliding) for 499
Squadron takes place with 636 VGS (Volunteer Gliding
School) at Swansea Airport, and cadets are given plenty of
opportunity to gain gliding experience.
Gliding scholarships are also available,
and 499 Squadron can proudly say that our
cadets have excelled at this pursuit.
Jon is currently attending the 636 VGS,
and is due to complete his Gliding
Scholarship early 2008

Pictured below (now)
Flt Sgt
Matthew Needs, being given expert range
advice during summer camp at RAF Odiham 2004 Shooting is not a compulsory activity,
so cadets don't have to take part. However,
shooting stands out as being a favourite activity for
most cadets
499 Squadron have the use of a 25 metre indoor range
located in the town, and regular visits are arranged for
those keen to have a go under regulated supervision.
Some 499 Squadron cadets who won a shooting
competition in 2006 can be seen accepting their awards

This
Himalayas Millennium Expedition,
was a special trip for the Year
2000. Mera Peak, which is in the Nepalese
Himalayas, is the highest
trekking peak in the world at
21,246ft. It took us two
weeks to trek to the top, and 1
week to trek back. There
were 14 members of the Group, of
which 4 reached the top.
