Flight One (Easter Camp)
Thursday 10th April
No 6 AEF (RAF Benson)
Aircraft Type and Number: Tutor GBY VL
Duration: 30 mins
Pilot: Sqn Ldr Elder

Flight Description

When I was on camp at RAF Haton, we where given the opportunity to go flying. As Halton didn't have a runway, we went on the bus to nearby RAF Benson. I waited in the waiting room for about an hour or two before going up.  I was the 10th cadet to fly out of 24 I think. They kitted me out and off I went! Before taking off, my pilot asked me if there was anything in particular I would like to do, and I answered “Aerobatics please (=D)”.  He told me the girl that went up before me looked terrified when he asked if she wanted to do any, and was glad that I wanted to.

We took off and as soon as we where up, he gave me control. He let me use the throttle and air brakes.  I was completely in control. J

We found a suitable place and began the aerobatics!  We started with him reminding me how to do the barrel roll, loop and stall turn whilst I was following through. Then I took control and did them myself.  The pilot then did the figure of eight and asked if I wanted to do it myself.  A kind offer, but I was starting to feel ill from the heat in the cockpit, so I turned down his offer.  We went to land, and decided to do a fake emergency landing.  It wasn’t much different to a normal landing, the only difference was that the engine was off, which you don’t need during landing anyway.

All in all, it was a good flight, one of the best I have been on.  The pilot was very friendly and it was nice to fly in a different area, on a nice day.  I would like to go back to RAF Benson and look at the Merlin’s and Puma’s some time, and maybe have a flight in one of those, but also in the Tutor again, as the surroundings were nice, although I couldn’t go looking for my house as it was too far away.
